Sharon Zukin and Miriam Greenberg discuss Amazon’s decision to locate in New York City, the politics this choice evoked, and the online giant’s subsequent choice to reverse that decision.


Sharon Zukin is a Professor of Sociology at the City University of New York, Brooklyn College. Her books include Loft Living: Culture and Capital in Urban Change (1989, Rutgers) and the award-winning Landscapes of Power: From Detroit to Disney World (1993, University of California Press). Her upcoming book with Oxford University Press, The Innovation Complex: Cities, Tech, and the New Economy, is slated to be published in 2020.

Miriam Greenberg is a Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Her books include Branding New York: How a City in Crisis Was Sold to the World (2008, Routledge) and Crisis Cities: Disaster and Redevelopment in New York and New Orleans (2014, Oxford)
